Intake of flavonoids, especially flavonols and flavanones, has been favourably linked with a reduced risk of heart diseases such as myocardial infarction and with stroke. In particular consumption of tea, a rich source of flavonols and catechins, and a moderate consumption of wine was related to a lower risk of myocardial infarction in a couple of studies. Risk reductions of coronary heart disease   of up to 65% were reported.   

In the epidemiological studies it was not possible to tell whether the effects were caused by the mentioned flavonoids or some other components in tea or wine. In the end, only intervention studies (a study where for example flavonoids are given to the participants and then it is monitored whether it has an impact on a disease) with pure flavonoids will be able to establish a protective effect of flavonoids in cardiovascular diseases.
